In the post-meltdown spotlight, no institution, no matter how fiscally virtuous it thinks it is, can do business the old ways

Michael Hiltzik, headline in the print version of an article in the LA Times on strong public reaction to spending by financial institutions on practices perceived to be frivolous and wasteful.

Indeed, overall consumer price inflation measured on a 12-month basis was close to zero last month. Core inflation, which excludes the direct effects of food and energy prices, also has declined significantly.

The projections for core inflation also were marked down, to a central tendency bracketing 1 percent.  Both overall and core inflation are expected to remain low over the next two years.
